The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
